Winning the Race
Dauntless Chemical LLC takes its name from the famed racing schooner, Dauntless, built in 1869 in Mystic, a small port town in Connecticut on Long Island Sound which was a prominent whaling and shipbuilding center throughout the 19th century.

Dauntless sailed for the first America's Cup defense, held on 08 August 1870, defeating the English challenger, Cambria. She was selected to start as the Cup defender in the second defense in October 1871, but developed a technical problem on the way to the starting line and was replaced by the back-up ship Columbia, which won the race, defeating the English challenger, Livonia.
Dauntless was originally owned by James Gordon Bennett, Vice-Commodore of the New York Yacht Club and sailed out of her home port of Essex, Connecticut. She continued to race in many New York Yacht Club-sponsored races, including two transatlantic races, over the next 20 years. She was retired from racing in the 1890's, having logged an impressive number of victories.
